The Time Optimist

Just one more chapter.

I say these words all the time!! Or I will say “Let me finish this chapter” thinking it will only take me a minute or two more.

And then I look up and 20 minutes went by. What the heck!?!?

I am convinced that there are 2 kinds of minutes in this world.

The first is the kind that lasts approximately 4.7 hours when you’re waiting for the brownies to cool enough to eat without burning the roof of your mouth.

The second – and far more mysterious – is the infamous “one minute”.

This minute is a liar!

When my kids were little I remember them telling me “Just one more minute!” as they finished putting their Lego pieces together or were trying to finish a level on a game. I would patiently (or not so patiently) remind them that it was time to leave. I hated arriving somewhere late! And they would promise me it would only be another minute.

Ten minutes later……..

Still building, still battling, still not leaving the house. LOL

Fast forward many years later and I’ve discovered time has just gotten sneakier.

Every morning I leave for work thinking, “I’m doing pretty good on time.”

I live exactly seven minutes from a major intersection. So imagine my surprise when I glance at the clock as I reach that intersection……

Thirty minutes have somehow vanished!

What happened?? Did I accidently drive through a wormhole? Did I find a Bermuda Triangle in my town?

And it’s not just driving. You will tell yourself you’ll scroll social media for “just one more minute”. Forty-five minutes later you’re somehow emotionally invested in a family of cows and have learned how to decorate a 3-tier wedding cake.

Don’t even get me started on how long a chapter in a book can really last. It can be the longest 3 minutes of my life or the shortest 3 hours and I don’t understand why I am so hungry! IYKYK

I’ve come to the conclusion that somewhere out there is a magical dimension filled with all the minutes we’ve accidentally lost. They’re hiding with the missing paper that I JUST put down, the Tupperware lids, and the cookies everyone swears they didn’t eat.

So the next time I tell someone, “I’ll just be a minute,” Just know it could be 20.
